I'd recommend to not make an unprivileged user to privileged user switch
(if you are concerned about security).  From this point of view ssh
r_grg@...alhost is no better than su - (although both are better than
sudo).

As for me, when I need root powers on my PC, I'm switching to another
console (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F2 in X) and login as root.
