No. MySQL (MySQL AB / Sun Microsystems) is not MS SQL (Microsoft), and  
most likely their hashing algorithms differ notably, whatever version.

My idea is to not attempt to crack a MySQL hash using the MSSQL  
algorithm, as this will likely produce nö results. ;-)

Where from / how did you obtain your hash? That might help identifying  
the proper format.

Did you try John without --format at all, or with --format=MySQL?
