Oh, I think I know why these messages are normally hidden from view.  I
cross-posted the interview announcement to the announcement list and to
john-users.  A few subsequent messages were posted as followups to this
announcement - which Gmane recognized (by "looking" at the headers).

I don't think this is the desired behavior, but at least the cause is
clear now.
