Just for the record I changed this again, after finally realizing why I 
got different results at different times. Now, if you have gcc >= 4.7 
*and* have (and build for) AVX/XOP, you get 8x, otherwise you get 4x. I 
tested a snapshot of gcc-4.9 and it too is fine with this.
