changing the user to root didn't make any difference.

I'm running xinetd 2.3.9 if that makes any difference.  I took the 
/etc/xinetd.d/pop3 file from my previous mandrake installation which was 
using xinetd as well, but probably an older version.  I"ll browse xinetd's 
website today to make sure the file is setup correctly as well.
