Yes, this "pool" and "sources" thing can be confusing.  The pool
contains whatever third-party tarballs, etc. were ever used by any
branch of Owl.  If you see a certain file under pool/sources/ for your
package name, this does _not_ imply that the file is actually being used
by your branch of Owl - rather, the file might have been used by a long
abandoned branch.  The sources directory/symlink trees for each branch
contain symlinks to whatever pool files are actually being used by the
given branch.  (So you'd use lftp's "mirror -L" command to download just
those files from the pool, as mentioned in DOWNLOAD.)  However, those
files are merely unmodified third-party sources (with very few
exceptions) - _not_ our actual sources.  Our modifications to those
third-party sources go into the native tree that is available on our FTP
mirrors as native.tar.gz (separately for each branch), as well as via
anoncvs and CVSweb (with branches appropriately tagged).
