I wonder why they keep reinventing stuff.

How about lsb_release ?  (It is even mentioned in that
page.)

(Maybe it is way too linux-specific which is reflected
in its name (first "l"), but it does exactly that).

If running a command is not good, maybe /etc/lsb-release
as output from lsb_release is ok...
