Just to nitpick, it is not entirely correct to say that
"238.1.1.el5.028stab084.3 and numerous previous kernels are compilable"
with gcc 3.4.5 - they are compilable after our patch, which fixes other
issues (with inlining, as you know).  It's just that this specific issue
is new, and that we're unaware of a fix for it yet...
