I took Peter's earlier patch, rebased it on top of the current mainline tree for easier testing, and tweaked the makefiles to only use objtool --mcount when CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION is enabled and the compiler supports -mfentry. This works for me with both gcc and clang. Thoughts?
