Actually I does not add it at first since I does not really understand why there is a special case for Thumbs2 (as far I understand, instructions size can also be 4 bytes). Yep. I have to make more thorough tests, but things like echo HARDENED_ATOMIC_OVERFLOW > <debugfsmountpoint>/provoke-crash/DIRECT raise the exception as well (with hardened message and stack trace).
