Off the top of my head, it can be one or more of: corrupted file,
incompatible software, character encoding differences, keyboard layout
differences, mistyping the password, trying to use the password on a
different archive from the one you cracked the password for.  Since you
recognize the password, the issue is probably unrelated to JtR.
