JtR is able to use mask mode, optionally along with most other modes,
and for most (all? I'm not sure either) fast hashes it will do the mask
portion on GPU (eliminating the host & PCIe bottleneck).  So that's the
way to go for fast hashes.

For example, you can do things like this:

-inc=lower -min-len=8 -max-len=8 -mask='?w?l?l?l?l'
