Unfortunately that version is way older than reasonable. Try downloading
a snapshot from github:
https://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper/archive/bleeding-jumbo.tar.gz
If that fails too, like Brad said you need to paste actual error
messages or no-one will be able to even take a guess.
