This has now been changed to work this way.  I also added ability to log 
the date format to screen when running JtR using the --log-stderr 
command line switch.  This date is controlled by a different john.conf 
variable, so it can be nothing (i.e. commented out), or it can be 
something different than the date format being logged in the log file.
