Perhaps you could choose a free format like .7z instead of .rar? 7z can be created and extracted with free tools, should be supported by most archivers like WinRAR  and is usually smaller then rar3.

Another possibility is .tar.xz which is also nice.

If you want to use .zip you could try the following trick: create a .zip archive without compression and then compress it to another .zip. Poor man's solid archive:-)
