You should leave john.conf as-is and create an empty john.local.conf. I 
guess I should change that error to be non-fatal and maybe even silent.

I'm not sure why they're not in Dhiru's repo.

Please report the outcome (summary line) of a --test=0 run. It will just 
run self-tests so ignore the weird speed figures it will show.
