Did you crack any other passwords, e.g.m using a russian word list using
koi8-r encoding od windows-1251 encoding?
Then you'd know.

Do you have access to the system in question?
Can you create a sample hash and post hash and known password for it?

Otherwise, implement both external modes, start both, see which one
works better, and interrupt the other.
