The MPI patch for john, afaik, supports any stone-age MPI environment. 
In fact it has workarounds for a couple of problems with specific MPI 
environments (the few that was reported to me or the list). But it is 
generally a very good idea to use the latest stable one.

W.A. had a spectacular crash triggered just by the fact he forgot to say 
"--pot" before the potfile, thus giving a non-existing input file. I 
suspected it had nothing to do with john but the MPI environment. I also 
thought Macs had some kind of packet manager or other means of easy 
installation/upgrade - if I had realised how much trouble WA would have 
upgrading, I would not have given that advice that soon.
