The latest (revision4) did in fact fix the issue, but I also did a
complete install of Cygwin as well
so I will try to narrow it down before the new year as I would like to
contrib wiki instructions on
how to compile the wonderful JTR on M$ for others who are as clueless as I!

0-5 chars (LM) using default passwd.lst and un-commenting all rules in
john.conf (I am crazy)
on a Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.33Ghz takes under 3 minutes
