I am guessing that by a "multicore" version you refer to one of the
unofficial patches or builds available from:

This is not the only modification of JtR for parallel processing.  Some
others are available at:

	ftp://ftp.openwall.com/pub/projects/john/contrib/mpi/

It probably was not supposed to be faster.

Now, this might be a bug.  The patch author is the one to comment on
this, if he wants to.  Note that the bindshell.net web page above
mentions a mailing list intended for discussions of this specific patch.
