Yes, it may result in more passwords getting cracked during the "single
crack" pass.

It won't speed things up directly - in fact, it may cause JtR to spend
more time in "single crack" mode.  However, if more passwords do get
cracked during "single crack", it may mean that there's less work to do
for subsequent cracking modes, resulting in a slight speedup.

You don't need to.  Just copy the passwd and shadow files off those
boxes, then run "unshadow" on whatever system you can run it on.
