I've briefly tested this (with only the self-test) on:

Linux/x86 (Owl 1.1+, gcc 2.95.3)
Linux/x86-64 (Owl 2.0+, gcc 3.4.5)
Linux/alpha (Owl 1.1, gcc 2.95.3)
Linux/sparc (Owl 2.0, gcc 3.4.5)
NetBSD/sparc64 (NetBSD 3.0, gcc 3.3.3)

The last two are big-endian, and this covers all four combinations of
32/64-bitness and endianness, as well as architectures with strict
alignment requirements. The patch works fine.

I've placed this revision of the patch (with the lost Makefile hunk
re-added by me) into:

	ftp://ftp.openwall.com/pub/projects/john/contrib/

and moved the previous revision to under the historical/ subdirectory.

I might also link to it from the website, as I think that this patch
obsoletes Olle Segerdahl's older one.

Thanks!
