Thanks.  I edited john.conf per your instructions. 
One point to clarify below:  That listing was
obviously not  a cat john.pot it was a ./john -show
passwd.1.  I meant to do a cat passwd.1.

Yes, perhaps, however this does not look exactly like
the pwdump-style
format that JtR expects:

Administrator:500:73CC402BD3E791756C3D3B817E02809D:C7E2622D76D3F001CF08B0753646BBCC:Built-in

account for administering the computer/domain::
