IIRC, the current-generation MIC is using a low-power core design, based on the Atom series. It lacks advanced features like out-of-order execution which is commonplace in desktop CPUs. No, the current generation KNC is based on much older core, the next one KNL will based on Atom's core. That's part of the story behind performance expectations. For ALU-bound computations we could try to do better estimations using Intel's spec - if it is publicly available. Thanks, Lukas
