Hi!
I just saw a blogpost linking to this optimized sha1 implementation:

In short, the creator of hashcat analyzed sha1 and found out 21% of the
xor-operation cancel out... This leads to the possibility to optimize the
implementation. I guess the john code could also use this optimization.
