IMHO it could be worth it for you to take a more active stance in such
questions. At least in clear-cut cases which don't require additional
research.

Format of hashes is an external interface of john so changing them at
will is not very good. Suppose that some other tool (say, metasploit)
becomes able to dump such hashes. It would be natural for it to use
john's format. It's harder for john to change its format after that.

But maybe this is only a minor point and doesn't worth you time, I don't
know.
