We could make it configurable and default to off. It just beats me why 
anyone would prefer that.

If this must be configurable, I *will* make it a john.conf option (thus 
not saved in the rec file) so I can set it correctly and forget about 
it. So what you say could happen. On the other hand, the same is true if 
you run a session, pause it, rewrite a rule set, and resume.
