I tried the "break on write" approach at an earlier time:

I did not try it on opt_errors[1], which appeared to be corrupted on a
cut-down 1.7.7-jumbo-6 tree.  Maybe I should have, but by the time I
spotted this, I was already running out of time for making the release,
which I did not want to postpone for another day.
