Neighbor Discovery (ND)

• ICMPv6 is used for ND messages
• Multicast is used (unlike ARP)
• To request the link-layer address: neighbor solicitation (NS) query
• To provide some info: neighbor advertisement (NA)
  • Soliced flag: S=1 – in response to NS
  • S=0 – «unsolicited» NA
• Information is stored in:
  • neighbor cache (NC)
  • destination cache (DC)
  Information exchange with upper-layer!
