Actually, with offers like "Intel Xeon E5 2670 V3 ES 2.2Ghz 30MB 12 Core
LGA2011-3 120W 22nm Processor CPU" for $194, it makes little sense to go
for anything older than v3 even if you build many cheaper systems.

You need v3 for AVX2, which provides almost a 2x speedup (over AVX) for
many hash types other than bcrypt.  (You'll run many of those other hash
types on GPUs once you add GPUs to the system, though.)  For bcrypt, v3+
is about 30% faster than v2 and older.
