Please define "much higher performance" - is it 1% higher c/s rate, 10%
higher, or maybe twice higher - and for what hash types?  Are all other
hash types also faster or at least the same with these changed options?
What CPU are you on, what gcc version are you using?

Now this is interesting - I didn't know.  (I don't own a Mac.)

I'll try to remember to play with this next time I update and test
John's make targets for OS X.
