This is as expected - didn't you say that what you have is some result
of Blowfish encryption, not a MySQL password hash?  It's just that you
(or your software) happened to use the same ASCII encoding syntax.

P.S. It is not a good practice to be unnecessarily running programs as
root.  John does not require root privileges for most of its operation.
