samdump.tar.gz from john/contrib/win32/pwdump/ compiles just fine on a
recent Linux system (Owl 2.0) with OpenSSL 0.9.7g.  It does not compile
on an older Linux system (Owl 1.1) with OpenSSL 0.9.6m, but that would
be trivial to fix.  I think it should be similarly trivial to get it to
compile on FreeBSD.
